Peterborough, Canada—Loie Fallis, who recently retired as Vice-President of Artistic Planning at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra after 46 years, is the winner of the Orchestras Canada Betty Webster Award for 2026.
Loie Fallis was nominated by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The award celebrates Loie’s more than four decades of championing Canadian creativity: her steadfast support of Canadian composers and the new work she has brought to life, her mentorship of generations of emerging artists, and her commitment to creating space for Indigenous and equity-deserving voices on the orchestral stage. Her win was announced at Orchestras Canada’s Annual General Meeting on September 24, 2026.
The Betty Webster Award was established in 2002 to honour Mrs. Elizabeth Webster, C.M. (1925-2018), Orchestras Canada’s founding Executive Director. Past winners include distinguished musicians, volunteers, educators, ensembles, and arts managers: a tribute to Mrs. Webster’s inclusive vision for Canadian orchestras. In 2026, under the theme Championing Canadian Creativity, the jury focused on individuals who support the creation of original work by Canadian orchestras, including those who create space for Indigenous artists and underrepresented communities and who contribute to original Canadian programming, recording, touring, and community partnerships.
Loie Fallis is one of the most seasoned and respected artistic administrators in the classical music world. She joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1980 as Manager of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, becoming the first woman appointed to the orchestra’s management team. Over 46 years she went on to oversee the TSO’s programming at Roy Thomson Hall and its summer programming at Ontario Place, and rose to Vice-President of Artistic Planning, working with five Music Directors, including Sir Andrew Davis, Gunther Herbig, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Peter Oundjian and current Music Director Gustavo Gimeno. She was a key force in realizing the TSO's touring ambitions, taking the orchestra to such destinations as the Canadian Arctic, the Pacific Rim, Europe, Israel, and Iceland, and she was central to the planning of the TSO’s 100th anniversary season in 2022. She retired from the TSO on June 30, 2026.
A devoted mentor and advocate for Canadian artists, Loie has championed Canadian composers through the New Creations Festival, commissioning programs, and recordings, and by keeping new work alive through repeat performances and recordings, bringing Canadian composers to international audiences. She has guided generations of emerging artists through initiatives such as the Affiliate Composer program, Explore the Score, and the Resident Conductor program as well as the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, and she created the conditions for Indigenous artists and equity-deserving communities to realize ambitious, large-scale orchestral productions. A graduate of Queen’s University and the Banff Centre, she has served on the boards of the Glenn Gould Foundation, Concerts in Care/Health Arts Society, and Orchestras Canada, and is a member of the League of American Orchestras and the International Society for the Performing Arts.
In response to receiving the award, Loie Fallis said:

This award is especially meaningful because Betty Webster was an important role model for me as a young woman beginning a career in arts administration. She was a leader who inspired confidence, and her deep commitment to championing Canadian artists at home and on the world stage profoundly influenced my own work.”
The award includes a plaque and a donation to an orchestra or a group of the winner’s choosing. Ms. Fallis has asked that this year’s donation be directed to The Kingston Symphony, where she was a member of the French Horn section during her studies at Queen’s University.
The national jury was chaired by OC board member, Prince Edward Island Symphony Music Director and Symphony 21 Artistic Director, Jaelem Bhate, and included Hanna Choi (Vice President, Market Development, Winspear Centre and Edmonton Symphony Orchestra); Megan Benjafield (Music Education Manager, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and General Manager, Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra); Brandyn Lewis (Double bassist, Co-founder and Artistic Advisor, Ensemble Obiora); and last year’s Betty Webster Award winner, Yvonne DeRoller (violist, educator, musician advocate and 2025 winner of the Betty Webster Award).
Speaking about the Award, jury chair Jaelem Bhate noted, “Loie Fallis has spent a lifetime making Canadian creativity possible. Working largely behind the scenes, she has championed Canadian composers, mentored countless emerging artists, and opened space on the orchestral stage for voices that had too rarely been heard there. The jury was moved by the breadth and generosity of her contribution to our field, and we are delighted to recognize her with this year’s Betty Webster Award.”
OC’s Executive Director, Katherine Carleton commented, “Over the course of her career, Loie Fallis has quite simply transformed orchestral music in Canada. She is personable, kind, perceptive, ethical, wise, and hilarious, and she has manifested a \u200b relentless and compelling commitment to music, musicians, audiences, and Canadian creativity every single day of her forty-six year career. It is a privilege to honour her.”
