John Adams Returns

One of the most prolific and influential composers and conductors of our time, John Adams returns to the TSO podium, leading sensational Spotlight Artist Anna Prohaska in “This is prophetic!” from his era-defining opera Nixon in China, depicting the historic 1972 US Presidential visit. The program also features the Canadian Première of Adams’s Frenzy, a thrilling and energetic new work that will leave you on the edge of your seat, and his captivating arrangement of Debussy’s Le Livre de Baudelaire, which will transport you to a world of poetic beauty. The evening opens with Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso, a vibrant and playful piece that bursts with lively rhythms and Spanish flair, setting the stage for an unforgettable musical journey.

Acclaimed conductor Gianandrea Noseda returns with Canadian violinist Timothy Chooi, who masterfully interprets Bruch’s First Violin Concerto, every note and phrase speaking to the heart with its melodic charm and dramatic intensity. The concert opens with Petrassi's Concerto for Orchestra No. 2, showcasing the orchestra’s colour and virtuosity, and culminates in Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, an epic finale filled with rhapsodic vigor and dramatic flair.

Mozart’s gracefully animated Violin Concerto No. 3 complements Rossini’s famed overture to The Barber of Seville, which audiences will instantly recognize from television and film. The performance also includes Johann Strauss II’s spirited overture to Die Fledermaus, which will have you waltzing in your seat, and Stravinsky’s playful Jeu de cartes, adding an extra touch of mischief to this enchanting program.

Raise a glass to a vibrant new season! The evening begins with the Canadian première of Carlos Simon's Wake Up!, a powerful and evocative work that challenges listeners to engage with the world around them. Following this, Spotlight Artist and Canadian piano sensation Jan Lisiecki joins Concertmaster Jonathan Crow and Principal Cello Joseph Johnson for Beethoven’s captivating Triple Concerto, a piece that shines a light on three soloists. Finally, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition invites you on an imaginative stroll through an art gallery, each note echoing the brush strokes of a different painting. Before the concert and during intermission, explore our lobby display featuring the paintings that inspired Mussorgsky’s work, complete with insights on how each piece connects to the music you’ll hear.
